Hijabi Ballers’ mission is to create positive sport experiences for Muslim girls and women by eliminating systemic barriers to their participation. We aim to be a leader in Toronto’s cultural and sport spaces, facilitating access to opportunities, resources and networks for Muslim athletes and their allies. Our vision is a city where Muslim girls and women can participate in high-quality, safe, and sustainable sport programs, with representation in coaching and leadership roles. Our values of diversity, advocacy, knowledge-sharing, collaboration and community-voice guide all of our programming and operations. While our focus is on Muslim women, we welcome participants of all backgrounds to engage in our activities.
The name Hijabi Ballers represents three things: being a female of Muslim faith, being an athlete, and being a boss. The project is meant to shine light on those who visibly represent their faith while portraying themselves as athletes, in the urban diaspora. The word 'baller', an umbrella term for all athletes and holds a strong connotation of being a boss, being successful and being bold. A Hijabi Baller is a Muslim female athlete who is proud of her intersectional identity.
